It started with a single step more than 40 years ago—a single delicate step that introduced ballet to Las Vegas and began a legacy of inspiration, education and community that lives on today. Now, after so many wondrous years, the next great step is here, and Nevada Ballet Theatre (NBT) invites you to be a part of it all.
This season NBT begins its long-awaited residency at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts, an honor bestowed upon only one other local company. This is an art center truly worthy of the world’s finest performances, and NBT has planned a season that will deliver in full. Following is a summary of shows for NBT’s 2012–13 premiere season at The Smith Center.
George Balanchine's “Jewels”
October 13–14, 2012
For the first time ever, three internationally recognized companies—NBT, Pacific Northwest Ballet and Ballet West—come together to perform George Balanchine’s three-part masterwork Jewels, inspired by the everlasting beauty of emeralds, rubies and diamonds. With special permission from The George Balanchine Trust and sponsored by Van Cleef & Arpels, the jewelers who inspired the piece, this is a tribute to Balanchine and a monumental occasion for Las Vegas.
“The Nutcracker”
December 15–23, 2012
See The Nutcracker like never before—a brand-new, original production featuring new sets, costumes and surprises yet to be revealed. Choreographed by NBT’s Artistic Director James Canfield, this highly anticipated rendition, sponsored by the Caesars Foundation, will be a treat for all ages.
The Joffrey Ballet
January 22–23, 2013
The first company to appear on television, the first to perform at the White House and the first American company to visit Russia, The Joffrey Ballet soon will make their very first appearance at The Smith Center. NBT and The Smith Center proudly welcome the company as they perform three unique pieces: Le Sacre du Printemps, a rare classic; the modern masterpiece In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated; and the Jane Austen–inspired ballet Age of Innocence.
New York City Ballet Moves

The New York Times calls the New York City Ballet “the foremost creative ballet troupe in the world.” Now, after more than 60 years of excellence, they have hand-selected their finest dancers and crafted a spectacular program featuring works from some of the most beloved choreographers of today, including George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Peter Martins and Christopher Wheeldon.

Artistic Director James Canfield has an unseen talent for transforming text into dance. Now, for an unforgettable season finale, he will bring one of the bard’s most beloved tales to life just in time for Mother’s Day weekend.
